The incident at the Riverchase Galleria in Hoover began with a physical altercation between an 18-year-old man and the shooter, the police said. The confrontation took place in the mall, near Footaction stores and JC Penney.

The gunman opened fire, injuring the teenager, according to Hoover Police Captain Gregg Rector. An officer confronted the gunman as he escaped and shot him dead, he said.

A 12-year-old girl was also beaten and injured, but by whom, says Rector, is blurry. The two injured people were hospitalized.

Witnesses described hearing gunshots inside the shopping center open late on Thanksgiving night. The Hoover Police Department said the scene was now secure.

Hoover is about 10 miles from Birmingham.

Brookfield Properties, owner of the mall, said it had been devastated by the fire.

"We are working closely with the Hoover Police Department and we are grateful for their quick action to contain the situation," said spokeswoman Lindsay Kahn.

"Although there is currently no danger to our community, the mall will remain closed for tonight."
