An American airman killed in a Ukrainian plane crash

A A member of the US Air Force was killed Tuesday while he was at the back of a Ukrainian fighter plane that crashed while that he was participating in an exercise, announced the army Wednesday. The Ukrainian pilot was also killed.

The US airman, who has not yet been identified while family members were informed, was participating in a "familiarization flight" during the multinational exercise in Ukraine, according to a statement from the US Air Force in Europe.

The incident concerned only the Ukrainian Su-27UB, and no other aircraft was involved. The US and Ukrainian governments are investigating the cause of the accident.

The American aviator was a member of the 144th Fighter Wing of the California Air National Guard, based in Fresno.

"It's a sad day for the United States and Ukraine," said Major-General Clay Garrison, commander of the California National Guard and director of Exercise Clear Sky, which lasted two weeks. "Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends and other aviators of the American airman and the Ukrainian airman who were killed in the incident."
