The Air Force confirmed that an American soldier was aboard a Ukrainian fighter plane that crashed in the country during a military exercise on Tuesday.

The Ukrainian fighter Su-27UB was participating in the multinational Clear Sky exercise in the Khmelnytsky region, in the west of the country, when the accident occurred, said the official. American air force in Europe in a statement.

The California Air National Guard participated in Clear Sky, an exercise that begins for the first time on October 8 and ends this week. Affected US aircraft include F-15C Eagles, KC-135 refueling aircraft, MQ-9 Reaper drones and a C-130J Super Hercules.

The effort aims to "build regional capacity to ensure air sovereignty and promote peace and security through cooperation, collaboration and interoperability with NATO partners and other allies in the region".
