The US soldier killed in Afghanistan on Saturday was identified as a 25-year-old elite forest ranger in the state of Washington.
Sgt. Leandro Jasso was fatally wounded by a small arms fire while he was supporting the Operation Operation Sentinel Operation in Khash Rod District, Nimruz Province, said Army spokesman Loren Bymer in a statement.
"The loss of Sgt. Jasso is felt by his family and loved ones, by all who have served with him and by all in this mission to protect our country and our allies, "said General Austin" Scott "Miller, US senior official in Afghanistan , at the Washington Post.
Additional details on the operation were not immediately available and the incident is currently under investigation.
Jasso was a team leader of the 2nd Battalion of the 75th Ranger Regiment, the armed elite. The unit is based at the Lewis-McChord Common Base in the state of Washington when it is not deployed.
The sergeant, originally from Leavenworth and enlisted in 2012, was described as humble and professional by the commander of his battalion.
His death marks the tenth fatality of fighting for the US military in Afghanistan in 2018, the first full year since the Trump government made the decision to keep 15,000 US troops in the country in order to continue fighting against the Taliban and other insurgent groups.
Death has killed 2,409 Americans killed in Operation Enduring Freedom since the beginning of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001.
