An employee of a McDonald's in Hackettstown was fooled Wednesday by confiscating more than $ 1,000 in the safe from the fast food restaurant as part of a scam, police said.

The police were called to the restaurant located on Route 182 at 7:32 and discovered that an hour earlier, an employee had received a call from a man stating that it belonged to the McDonald's & # 39; 39; s, according to a police statement from Hackettstown.

The man asked the employee, whose name had not been disclosed, to take money from the safe and use it to buy gift cards so that "the company can deposit money to help save jobs. "

The man then had the employee take a taxi and drive him to a shop where he had bought gift cards worth $ 1,200, the police said.

The worker then forwarded the gift card information to the rogue and returned to the restaurant, the statement said.

Hackettstown Police and the Warren County District Attorney's Office are investigating this incident.

People have asked anyone to "pay close attention to any caller asking for money or payment immediately".
