Over the weekend, two other children from a medical facility in Wanaque were diagnosed with adenovirus, which killed 10 medically fragile children in the facility since the beginning of the year. epidemic at the end of September, health officials said.

The two children bring to 33 the total number of pediatric cases registered at the Wanaque Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

This news is particularly worrying for a mother of an 18-year-old kid who is recovering from the virus in a nearby hospital and is due to return to the center this week. She fears her daughter will get sick again.

"I do not want her to come back, but it's the only facility available," the mother said Monday morning.

The mother, who lives in New York and has requested anonymity to protect the privacy of her family, has been at the bedside of her daughter at the St. Joseph University Medical Center in Paterson for a week.

"If I could take her home with me, I'll do it," she said. "She's medically stable, she understands that, but now she has to go home."

The health department will not disclose how many sick children are still in the center of Wanaque and how many have been taken to the hospital. But both new cases confirm that the virus is still spreading among residents of the facility's ventilation unit. No new cases were reported on Monday.

adenovirus: What do you want to know

Born with cerebral palsy, this 18-year-old woman has been living in Wanaque for six years since an episode of cardiac arrest that put her in a vegetative state.

The mother visited her daughter on November 5th and feared that yellowish secretions would come out of her daughter's mouth. She called the next day and was told that secretions were still present and that her daughter had developed a temperature of up to 99.6 degrees.

Fearing that her daughter might have contracted an adenovirus, the mother urged staff members to take her to the hospital.

On November 5th, the blood oxygen level of the 18 year old girl collapsed and she was given 80% pure oxygen in the emergency room to help restore these levels. explained the mother.

The adenovirus was diagnosed in his daughter later in the day. She developed pneumonia during a secondary infection. Her blood pressure and blood sugar levels went up all week, her mother said.

The girl had stabilized on Friday afternoon. On Monday morning, the doctors told the mother that her daughter had improved so much that she could be sent back to Wanaque on Tuesday.

Dr. Shereef Elnahal, State Commissioner for Health, was reluctant to move convalescing residents to other institutions, fearing that they can not transmit the virus. To complicate matters further, there are only four pediatric nursing homes in New Jersey. Wanaque and another Voorhees facility have adenovirus outbreaks and the other two are at full capacity with large waiting lists.

An outbreak is considered complete when two consecutive two-week incubation periods have elapsed. If no new cases are identified, the outbreak will be considered complete during the second full week of December.

At the same time, health officials reported that another child was suffering from a lighter form of adenovirus in the Voorhees long term care facility, in the Camden County. This brings to eight the total number of cases in this facility. Nobody died there.
