GREELEY, Colorado (AP) – State officials say a horse in northern Colorado has contracted a rare, incurable disease called equine infectious anemia, and about 240 other horses may have been exposed to it.
The Greeley Tribune reported Saturday that the horse was tested positive in late August and euthanized.
The Colorado Department of Agriculture says it is tracking the remaining 240 horses, of which a hundred have been sent to 20 other states. The officials did not list these states.
The department indicates that 37 horses have been located. He says that no test has been positive.
State officials say that equine infectious anemia can cause fever, weakness, weight loss, enlarged spleen, anemia, weak pulse and death.
It is most often contracted by blood-sucking insects, but can be spread by needles or other misused equipment.
The department says that the disease is not a threat to humans.
