An Indiana burglar robs a man at home, uses a scooter to escape

The Indianapolis police is looking for a burglar suspected of stealing items inside a house and having used a Bird electric scooter for leave the scene of the crime.

Michael Leppert said he was getting ready at home Tuesday morning when he heard what sounded like footsteps coming from the first floor. He shouted to check who was there, but when he did not receive an answer, he assumed that it was either his wife or his dog, he said. When he came down, however, he found that his wallet, his laptop, and his backpack were missing.

There was no sign of forced entry, Leppert told ABC News, adding that the burglar must have entered through the back door, which was unlocked.

While awaiting the arrival of the police, Mr. Leppert stated that he had spoken to his neighbor, who had seen a man in an electric scooter outside his home at the time burglary.

Bird, an electric scooter rental company that requires users to download an app to their phone and associate their credit card, sent the following statement to ABC News:

"We do not tolerate criminal behavior regardless of the mode of transportation used to commit the crime. When a type of irresponsible or criminal behavior is associated with someone on a bird, we encourage people to report this behavior to us to investigate. Bird reviews each report and takes appropriate action, including removing people from the platform. We are currently studying the situation and cooperating fully with local authorities during this process. "
