The Massachusetts authorities accused an undocumented immigrant of murdering three other crew members, one fatally, on a fishing boat 55 miles off the coast.
The US prosecutor's office in Massachusetts announced the charges on Monday, a day after declaring that Franklin Freddy Meave Vazquez had been beaten on the ship on which he was working, Captain Billy Haver, and three people were injured. One of these crew members is dead.
Vazquez, 27, from Mexico, was illegally in the country, according to the Ministry of Justice.
Since the crime took place in the United States special maritime and territorial jurisdiction, it is considered a federal matter. Vazquez was accused of a murder and a murder attempt leader.
The fishing boat, which has its port of call in Virginia, was near Nantucket when one of the seven crew members stated that he had been assaulted by Vazquez with a hammer and a knife , according to the US Attorney's Office. The crew member stated that he had seen a mate lying on deck, bleeding severely. Vazquez reportedly attacked a third crew member.
Vazquez climbed onto the mast of the ship before other crew members eventually captured him, the prosecutor's office said.
The captain issued a distress call, responded the German cruise ship Mein Schiff 6, the authorities said.
The first two crew members were treated by the doctor of the cruise ship, one of them having been declared dead.
Lindsay McDannold, who is married to Vazquez's father but is divorcing, criticized the suspect in an interview with WCVB, a Boston ABC affiliate.
Vazquez was charged with forcible kidnapping, intimidation or deception after being arrested on March 9 in Newport News, Virginia, for an attack on his daughter, McDannold said. He was released on bail, according to federal authorities.
"In March, he assaulted and strangled her and held her against her," McDannold said. "I think it's a travesty – I think the justice system has failed – I think they should do a better job in terms of controlling these people when they come in."
Vazquez risks his life in jail when he is convicted of murder.
He will then be deported after serving a potential sentence.
