Men who use androgenic anabolic steroids – such as testosterone – may be at higher risk of premature death and additional hospitalizations, according to a new Journal of Internal Medicine study.
For the study, 545 men who used androgenic steroids were matched to 5,450 controls. In addition, 644 men were punished for refusing to submit to a doping test and 6440 men were included in the replication cohort.
On an average follow-up of 7.4 years, there were seven deaths (1.3%) among anabolic androgenic steroids users and 23 (0.4%) among control group participants, resulting in a three times higher risk of death associated with androgenic drugs. anabolic steroids. The median annual number of contacts with hospitals was 0.81 among anabolic androgenic steroid users and 0.36 among controls. Acne, gynecomastia and erectile dysfunction affected more than 10% of users of anabolic androgenic steroids, and the prevalence of these disorders was significantly higher than in the control group.
