According to reports, a sandstone jug containing hundreds of Roman coins in gold was found on the site of an old theater in northern Italy.

Part of the bidding call dates back to the 5th century, according to Agence France-Presse.

The Minister of Culture, Alberto Bonisoli, described this discovery as "a discovery that fills me with pride".

"We do not yet know in detail the historical and cultural significance of this discovery, but this region is a real treasure for our archeology," he said on Facebook.

The cultural department tweeted photos of gold, which can be seen glittering through a crack in the old pot.

The officials said that they did not want to destroy the artifact to extract the pieces.

The treasure was discovered on Wednesday as teams prepared to demolish the Cressoni Theater in Como in order to build a luxury residence there.

The theater opened in 1870 and was closed in 1997 after being turned into a movie theater.

This redevelopment project has been put on hold to allow further excavations, reported AFP.

According to euronews.com, the parts were transported to a laboratory for further study.
