Andrew Gillum wields star power; Ron DeSantis calls it a distraction

Gillum and the Clinton connection:

Two years ago, Clinton put Gillum on a list of potential teammates. Although she lost Florida with 113,000 votes, Clinton won the popular vote nationwide and remains popular with older voters and moderates. On its mid-term program, appearances in October will take place in New Jersey, Chicago and Florida.

The Clinton object lesson

A progressive leader of the Florida House said that Clinton recalled the danger of reassurance in the polls. The last of the Florida governor's race rose nine points to Gillum.

Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith, D-Orlando, noted that all polls had Clinton leading in the final days of the 2016 race.

"We can not have that same complacency," Smith said Thursday after speaking at an event organized by DeSantis in Orlando.

Polls indicate that Gillum's advance on DeSantis has increased. Three of them published this week a support level higher than the margin of error of the survey. Gillum seems to represent the best chance for Democrats to win the Florida governor's race since Lawton Chile's reelection in 1994.

Clinton's announcement highlights the importance of the race for Democrats. The next governor has a veto when Statehouse and Congressional districts are established after the 2020 census key, key to control of the US House and the Florida legislature.

To help bolster the Democrats' chances at Florida races, former first lady Michelle Obama is due to travel to Miami this week (September 28) for a voter registration campaign.

We are not talking about the biggest star of the Democrats: former President Barack Obama.

Obama plans to campaign for five candidates for Democratic governorship – Colorado, California, Georgia, Illinois and Ohio.

Gillum's campaign remained silent when asked if there were plans to bring Obama to a final push in October.

Yet Gillum has assembled a range of celebrities and political figures to revive his campaign. In addition to Clinton and Sanders, he can count on athletes, singers and Hollywood celebrities for their money and support.

Alec Baldwin, Tyler Perry, Jane Fonda and Norman Lear all donated or raised funds for his campaign. Tom Joyner, heard on 90 radio stations across the country, tells listeners that he moved to Florida to vote for Gillum.

Meanwhile, the DeSantis campaign has rejected senior Democrat representatives. Florida voters will not be fooled by Gillum's list of celebrities, they say.

"No Hollywood liberal elite can distract Andrew Gillum from his disastrous record of corruption, crime and tax increases as mayor of Tallahassee," said spokesperson Stephen Lawson. from DeSantis.

"Our campaign focuses on Florida voters and Florida's issues, such as building our economic success, protecting our environment and increasing funding for classroom instruction," Lawson said.
