Earlier tonight, MLB and BBWAA announced the finalists of the main awards of 2018. It's the year's rookie, year manager, Cy Young and the most valuable player . The league has announced three finalists for each award in each league for a few years now. They try to arouse interest.
As expected, Miguel Andujar and Gleyber Torres are among the AL Rookie of the Year finalists. They fight against Shohei Ohtani angels. Here are all the finalists. The Yankees had no other finalists, which is not surprising. Having two Rookie of the Year finalists is pretty cool.
Andujar and Gleyber both started the season in Triple-A before quickly taking over. Andujar beat .297 / .328 / .527 (128 wRC +) with 27 homers and a rookie record in AL with 47 doubles. Torres hit 0.21 / .340 / .480 (120 wRC +) with 24 homers. Here are WAR rankings for AL recruits:
Baseball reference WAR
1. Joey Wendle: 4.3
2 Shohei Ohtani: 3.9
3 Brad Keller: 3.5
4 Gleyber Torres: 2.9
5 Jaime Barria: 2.6
6 Miguel Andujar: 2.2
The war of graphics
1. Shohei Ohtani: 3.8
2 Joey Wendle: 3.7
3 Miguel Andujar: 2.7
4 Brad Keller: 2.5
5 Ramon Laureano: 2.1
6 Jose Alvarado: +2.0
t-7. Gleyber Torres: +1.9
I'm pretty sure Ohtani will win the title of Rookie of the Year. The guy hit 22.25 / 0.361 / 0.564 (152 wRC +) and rolled 51.2 innings with a 3.31 ERA (3.57 FIP) and 29.9 percent of attacks. That's right-handed bonkers. And Ohtani did it while adapting to a new league and a new country. He was amazing. I would vote for him. Sorry, but it's true.
The 2011 Braves with Craig Kimbrel and Freddie Freeman were the last to finish first and second in the Rookie of the Year vote. The last AL team to do so was the 1984 Mariners with Alvin Davis and Mark Langston. The Yankees are sure to be among the top two Rookie of the Year finalists, voting for the third season in a row. Gary Sanchez was a finalist in 2016 and Aaron Judge won the award last year.
As for the other awards, it is not surprising that the Yankees do not have finalists. The judge's wrist injury brought him out of the MVP race and Luis Severino's second half match brought him out of the Cy Young race. Aaron Boone has never been very lucky to be elected director of the year. Not with other things that happened around the league.
Next week is the week of awards. Manager of the year will be announced Monday, rookie of the year Tuesday, Cy Young Wednesday and MVP Thursday. They will all be revealed during a live broadcast of the MLB network at 6 pm ET.
