The month of November was ugly for the Bengals and things officially got worse on Monday. The team announced that Andy Dalton had been placed on the injured reserve, which would end his season.
The starting quarterback of the Bengals collapsed in the third quarter of the Cincinnati's 35-20 loss to the Browns on Sunday. In the fourth half of the second half, Bengals center Billy Price sent a shotgun shot to Dalton's head. As Dalton tried to jump on the ball, the Browns defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah's knee collapsed on his right hand.
After the play, Dalton was examined on the edge of the field before being finally taken to the Bengals locker room.
After the match, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis was optimistic about the injury's prognosis.
"At first glance and all that is not (seriously) but they will do other tests," said Lewis, via ESPN.com.
Lewis spoke to the media again on Monday, and this time he did not seem so optimistic. During his press conference, the coach of the Bengals said Dalton should undergo more tests so that the team can determine the severity of the injury. The move to the casualty reserve means that Dalton's season is definitely over.
The loss of Dalton continues a disastrous month for the Bengals. At the beginning of November, the Bengals were sitting at 5 -3 and looked like a serious contender for a spot for the AFC wild card. However, over the last three weeks, the Bengals have lost three consecutive games, not to mention, A.J. Green has not been on the field for a moment in the past month because of an injury to the toe that he suffered in week 8.
The Bengals have been ravaged by injuries this year. Several players have been missing, including Green, Joe Mixon, Bernard Giovani, John Ross and Vontaze Burfict.
After Dalton's arrival, the Bengals will turn to Jeff Driskel, who will certainly begin his first career this week when the Bengals host the Broncos on Sunday at 1 pm AND, CBS, broadcast on CBS All Access or broadcast on fuboTV (try it for free). Driskel, who was originally selected by the 49ers in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL draft, has been part of the Bengals since 2017. The 25-year-old has been promoted quarterback quarterback this season after AJ McCarron's withdrawal freely.
Although he has not played much this season, Driskel has witnessed serious action following the fall of Dalton against Cleveland. During his short stay on the field, Driskel had 155 yards and a touchdown.
As Driskel begins now, quarterback Tom Savage of the Bengals has Monday to replace him.
This will only mark the second time that Dalton has not spent an entire season in an eight-year career. The 31-year-old quarterback has not missed a match since 2015, when he also lost time due to a right thumb injury after the Bengals pass.
Dalton's injury could make an interesting Cincinnati season, especially if Driskel plays well late in the game. The Bengals can get out of Dalton's contract after this year. If they cut it off during the off season, the move would not cost the Bengals anything because there is no more money left in their contract after 2018.
