Sarah Harrell felt the spirit of Christmas earlier this year.
Harrell, a flower designer at Flowers and Gifts in Englewood Square, designed and implemented the store's first Christmas tree in early November. In addition to ribbons, bows and Christmas ornaments, she decorated the angels tree with small tags depicting angels representing local children in need of Christmas presents this year.
Shoppers can remove an angel tag and bring it with a new child-friendly toy on the label. Harrell will present all gifts to the Salvation Army by the December 7th deadline.
"Our store has already done it many years ago and thought it would be a good year to bring it back. I was worried about all the help brought by the hurricane to the Salvation Army. They could be stretched that year to get gifts for Angel children. Misti Johnson, the store's owner, and her 6-year-old daughter Emma, also thought it was a good idea. Harrell said. "So we decided to put the tree and do what we could."
The Harrell Tree is part of the network of decorated Christmas trees from the Nash Salvation Army and Edgecombe Counties in twin counties that connects needy families to neighbors eager to help with gifts. Christmas children. The largest tree with the largest selection of angels is the Golden East Crossing Mall, near Santa's Workshop and Belk Department Store.
Major Amber Phelps said the Salvation Army began accepting Angel Tree applications in October and had about 171 families, which equates to about 300 children in need of Christmas presents.
Phelps is optimistic: the Salvation Army will get all the toys they need to give Christmas to the families they are committed to.
"We always worry" will we have enough? "And we know that there are many deserving causes this year with all the relief efforts following the hurricane in North Carolina," she said. "But we have received great support from the community and hope it will help us reach our goal."
Phelps said she has several businesses, citizen groups and churches to call and take care of an entire family or up to a dozen children to buy. All gifts must be new and in original packaging.
"If you can not buy all the gifts for a child, you can also drop individual gifts to help us fill in, if there is a child who has not received a bag full of gifts or a bag that did not materialize, "added Phelps.
Gifts should be given to the Salvation Army by December 7th.
