Angela Simmons mourns the death of the ex-fiancé, father of her son

Angela Simmons mourns the loss of her ex-fiancé and father of her only son, Sutton Tennyson, shot dead Saturday.

The Atlanta Police Service told PEOPLE that police responded to a call for shots fired shortly before 5 pm the Saturday.

Although the police refused to formally identify Tennyson, they said that "when they arrived, the police discovered a 37-year-old black man lying dead, shot in an open garage".

According to their preliminary investigation, shots were fired after a conversation with another man who degenerated. After firing several shots, the suspect then "left the scene by car".

The case is currently under investigation by the ODA homicide unit.

A spokesman for the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed to PEOPLE that Tennyson had been identified as the victim.

Sunday morning, the Grow Hip Hop star – who is the daughter of Run D.M.C.'s Rev. Run – posted a moving tribute series to Tennyson, writing that she was "hurt" and "numb".

"Thank you for leaving my best present," Simmons, 31, wrote on Instagram, next to a series of family photos.

"I have pain. I'm numb. Thanks for the spill [sic] love everyone, "she continued, adding that she could not" believe I even said Rest in Peace Sutton ".

At the conclusion of the message, she undertook to always watch over their son, Sutton Joseph, 2 years old.

"I promise to contain SJ in all the ways I promise," she wrote, adding an emoji heart.

She also shared many photos of Tennyson and their son together on her Instagram story.

In a blow back, Tennyson stood behind her arms around her, while they rocked their newborn baby.

"We created an angel," she wrote next to the shot.

Beside an image of Tennyson taking a nap on the couch with their child, she wrote with emotion: "Stay quiet Sutton".

The Simmons star confirmed her separation from Tennyson in December 2017.
