Angels' Shohei Ohtani ends the season as a batter as Tommy John's decision looms

Earlier this week, the two-way phenomenon of Angels and Rookie candidate of the year Shohei Ohtani learned that an MRI revealed new damage to UCL in his right elbow. This means that Ohtani will probably have to undergo surgery from Tommy John.

For now, Ohtani has chosen short-term plans …

And more than Fletcher:

This season, 23-year-old Ohtani, as DH, has an excellent 0.287 / 0.367 / 0.579 slash line with 18 home runs in 82 games. He also just played a home game on Wednesday, so the wrong diagnosis has not affected him yet.

Its launch, of course, is unknown. The results have certainly been there, as he has amassed 128 ERA + this season with 63 strikeouts and no un-won in 51 2/3 innings. The working hypothesis is that he will undergo a Tommy John operation during the off season, and perhaps he can continue to serve as a DH for the team while his elbow will heal and will recover next season. Obviously, there is not much to do with such an approach to rehabilitation, but given Ohtani's excellence on the plate, it's probably a risk.

For the moment, we're going to take advantage of the Ohtani batter for the rest of 2018, despite the disturbing injury and even though his Angels are not going to the post-season.
