For the second night in a row, NJ Transit commutes with a nightmarish commute, following another mechanical issue that causes delays over the hours of the Penn Station.
This time was the infamous Portal Bridge, a bridge bridge owned by Amtrak that crosses the Hackensack River and connects Kearny and Secaucus. The bane of commuter was unable to lock in place for an hour Tuesday afternoon.
The bridge was opened at 3:24 pm, but was not fully closed until 4:52 pm, Amtrak Spokesman Jason Abrams said.

Even after it was locked into place, NJ Transit and Amtrak trains that cross the bridge up to 90-minute delays as of 7 p.m.
NJ Spokesman Transit Nathan Rudy said cross-honing system-wide was in effect with NJ Transit nozzles as well as privately-owned nozzles. PATH was also accepted at Newark, Hoboken and 33rd Street in Manhattan.
The Portal Bridge is actually unable to lock earlier Tuesday as well. It was stuck from 9:50 am to 10:19 am, "Amtrak trains a train several times," Abrams said.
The state put $ 600 million on the table for a $ 1.5 billion replacement for the aging bridge in June. Construction of a new, two-track, bridge, designed to be 50 feet over the river could be completed in 2024, officials said.
It is part of the Gateway project which calls for two new Hudson River rail tunnels, 1910 tunnel tunnels and completion of a tunnel box under the Hudson Yards.
Commuters once again took over the night, after one night of 1,500 people were stranded on a NJ Transit train the lost power and became disabled for over an hour.
