The voice behind Princess Tiana speaks of the controversy surrounding the skin tone of her beloved character in the new Wreck-It Ralph movie.
Anika Noni Rose, who expressed Tiana in 2008 the The princess and the Frog, posted a long message on her Instagram at the end of Monday night explaining how she was "as surprised" as the fans to see Disney's first African-American Disney Princess with lighter skin and much sharper traits in the new movie, Ralph breaks the Internet.
"Aside from my personal feelings, I noted how people felt online (and in my dms) and I was happy to see that people are still very much in love and cheering on our princess," she said. Rose writes. "My team and I immediately called the studio to talk about the visual changes and three weeks ago I had a meeting in person with the Wreck-It Ralph team, my original host Mark Henn, and others.

News came out on Monday that Disney had been working to darken the princess's complexion and give it a more original look, with a rounder nose and a darker eye color. Rose explained in her statement that the original host intervened after they came to understand how the transition to CGI animation changed the character's appearance.
"They explained how the CGI animation did different things according to the color nuances of the characters compared to the original hand-drawn characters, and I was able to say how important it was for the little girls represented by her that her skin color remains as rich as she had been, and that her nose continues to be the little round nose that Mark has so beautifully rendered in the film; the same nose on my own face and on many other little brown faces around the world, which we see so rarely in fantasy, "wrote Rose.

The actress also thanked Disney for working to fix the problem after her presentation, including a face-to-face meeting where she was shown steps taken to restore Princess Tiana. She also posted a photo of her outside the studio and wrote how she "never gets old in these hallways" and is part of the legacy.
"I also appreciate the fact that, until then, Disney has had enough care and respect for all those who love Princess Tiana and her heritage to devote the time and money needed to make the adjustments needed, "continued Rose.
