Four people were killed Thursday during a shootout at a local newspaper building in Maryland, a CBS News source told the federal police. A suspect is in detention.

The shooting that took place in the newspaper Capital Gazette triggered a massive police reaction, as employees were evacuated from the building with their hands raised over their heads. The Gazette is a local newspaper owned by The Baltimore Sun.

Phil Davis, a Gazette reporter, tweeted that he was in the building when the shooting took place.

White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said that President Trump was informed of the shooting and that "our thoughts and prayers are with everything that is touched". Officials said the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was responding to the scene.

This is a story in development.
