Four people were killed Thursday during a shootout at a local newspaper building in Maryland, a CBS News source told the federal police. A suspect is in detention.
The shooting that took place in the newspaper Capital Gazette triggered a massive police reaction, as employees were evacuated from the building with their hands raised over their heads. The Gazette is a local newspaper owned by The Baltimore Sun.
Phil Davis, a Gazette reporter, tweeted that he was in the building when the shooting occurred. Davis said via Twitter that the gunman went through the glass door of the office and opened fire on several employees. He said that he was hiding under his desk and that the employees heard the shooter reload.
News Five people were injured. A patient is being treated at the University of Maryland Medical Center, a spokesman confirmed. The severity of the patient's injuries was not immediately available. Two other local hospitals said that they had not received any patients.
A police source told CBS News that the suspect was a white man in his early twenties and that he had no identification in him. Two law enforcement sources tell CBS News that the suspect used a shotgun.
Lt. Ryan Frashure of the Anne Arundel County Police confirmed that there had been "several injuries" as a result of the shooting, but declined to provide further details. He said that he believed that there was a suspect, but the police still investigating. Frashure said the officers are still cleaning the building and must look for other dangers, such as bombs and other shooters.
He urged the community to avoid the area and informed that a reunification center had been installed in a nearby shopping center
Maryland Governor Larry Hogan issued a statement saying that he was "absolutely devastated" by the tragedy. White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said President Trump was informed of the shooting and "our thoughts and prayers are with everything that's touched". Officials said the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was responding to the scene.
