Announcement of the new Arecibo message challenge

In 1974, the Arecibo Observatory entered history by transmitting the most powerful radio message ever broadcast in deep space. The famous Arecibo message was designed by staff of AO 74, led by Frank Drake, and with the help of astronomer and famous science communicator Carl Sagan. It contained information about the human race and had to be our intergalactic calling card.

"Our society and our technology have changed a lot since 1974," said Francisco Cordova, director of the NSF-funded Arecibo Observatory. "So, if we were assembling our message today, what would it look like? What would it look like? What should we learn to be able to design the right message? The questions we ask young people around the world through the new message Arecibo – the global challenge ".

The NSF-funded installation, which hosts the world's largest fully operational radar telescope, will launch its online competition today on the occasion of the 44th anniversary of the original Arecibo message. Check out the website of the Observatory for more details.

Organizers look for innovative ideas from global collaborative efforts of diverse, international, intergenerational student teams to inspire a new generation of space enthusiasts. and define the new Arecibo message.

But it will not be a simple task. To get started, teams of up to 10 students, from kindergarten to the end of college, must decode various indices that will be published online.

As a Chinese puzzle box, teams need to learn about space science, crack coded messages and solve puzzles to qualify, get instructions, sign up, and then submit their entries. Arecibo will release its first puzzle on its website and on social media channels this afternoon (November 16).

This challenge gives teams nine months to complete their projects. A winner will be announced during the Arecibo Observatory Week activities scheduled for 2019, including the special 45th anniversary celebration of the original Arecibo message.

"We have some surprises in store for the participants and we will share more details as the competition progresses," Cordova said. "We are looking forward to seeing what our young people from around the world will propose."

Laser technology could be turned into Earth's "porch light" to attract extraterrestrial astronomers

Boston MA (SPX) 06-Nov-2018

If extraterrestrial intelligence exists somewhere in our galaxy, a new MIT study suggests that laser technology on Earth could, in principle, be transformed into a kind of planetary porch light – a beacon powerful enough to draw attention to a distance as far as 20 000 light-years.

The research, which author James Clark calls a "feasibility study," appears in The Astrophysical Journal. The results suggest that if a powerful 1 to 2 megawatt laser was focused on a … read more
