Bill Daley, US Secretary of Commerce under President Clinton, Chief of Staff Obama and former governorship candidate for Illinois, with a name synonymous with Chicago politics, decided to run for mayor .
He will join us, with an official announcement expected Monday, according to the Chicago Tribune, a long list of declared and potential candidates after the surprising decision of Democratic mayor Rahm Emanuel, of two terms, not to run again.
Daley will seek the 22-year position held by his brother, Richard M. Daley, and for 21 years by his father, Richard J. Daley. The latter headed the town hall during some of Chicago's most notorious moments, including the violent clashes between police and protesters at the 1968 Democratic National Convention.
Daley may be helped or hurt by his brother's more recent legacy, widely credited with having ushered in an era of relatively low crime and bringing racial peace back to Chicago (though the lasting power of these efforts remains open to the violence of the city) statistics are now among the highest in the country. He has also defended widely popular green initiatives and courted international affairs, but has left the city effectively under water with a huge pension liability and other bills.

, was Bill Clinton's trade secretary from 1997 to 2000. He led Barack Obama's White House staff for a year, from early 2011 to early 2012, upon his return home and to the town hall.
