Another group of NC colleagues, in Wake County, won a million million dollar lottery prize, the NC Education Lottery announced in a press release.
The 14 employees paid $ 20 each after Roseanne Smith won the $ 1.5 billion jackpot for Tuesday's draw and opened an office pool, according to a press release on Friday.
It was enough money to buy 140 Quick Pick tickets at Circle K on Harrison Avenue in Cary, said lottery officials.
Erica Hayes of Cary discovered that they had won after turning on the television the next morning, according to the press release. The ticket matched the five white balls to win $ 1 million, beating a chance on about 12.6 million, officials said.
After state and federal taxes, winners in Wake County each won more than $ 50,000, lottery officials said in a press release.
"They said the winning ticket was sold in South Carolina, but they also claimed that two tickets in North Carolina had won $ 1 million," Hayes told the lottery after the group won its prize at the headquarters of the public lottery in Raleigh on Friday afternoon.
After seeing that she had won, Hayes sent a text to the group's supervisor, Francis Bassett of Zebulon, who was also part of the pool, according to the press release. Bassett confirmed the numbers and immediately organized a meeting to inform the others.
"At first I thought we had problems," colleague John Gulas de Cary told the lottery officials, according to the press release. "I was expecting him to say something about the fact that companies do not want us to play at the time of the company"
The lottery officials did not name the workers' company in the press release. The lottery will not reveal the company in which the winners are working if they wish, said a lottery spokeswoman at The Charlotte Observer this week.
The other group of NC collaborators earning $ 1 million – in Union County – also asked the lottery not to indicate where they were employed.
Some of the Wake County winners will pay mortgages and student loans, others will travel, according to the press release.
Hayes told lottery officials that she plans to take her daughter on her first vacation. "I am a single mother," Hayes said. "My daughter is 11. We have never been able to take a trip together, so I'm going to take her to Disney World and Harry Potter World."
Patrick Bloomer of Wake Forest has announced that he will purchase first place seats in Wrestle Mania. "It was either that, or trying to get Metallica to play in my garden," Bloomer told the lottery officials. "I thought Wrestle Mania was more likely."
The press release indicates that the other collaborators are John Parker of Clayton, David Pitts of Raleigh, Ryan Mowatt of Raleigh, David Peters of Fuquay Varina, Roseanne Smith of Fuquay Varina, David Mosley of Apex, Walter Overman of Raleigh, Richard Degenhardt of Cary, Derek Proffit of Raleigh and Ted Hart of Cary.
