SAN FRANCISCO: Thomas Kurian, former product manager at Oracle Corp, a technologist from Bengaluru, will lead Google Cloud early next year, the Internet giant said.

Kurian will replace Diane Greene as head of Google's cloud division, Greene told a blog on Friday after a tumultuous year for the group, which was behind Amazon and Microsoft.

Kurian, who spent 22 years at Oracle and was a close confidant of its founder, Larry Ellison, resigned in September after struggling to expand his cloud business.

Greene, the current CEO of Google Cloud, will continue to work with Kurian until January to ensure a smooth transition and will remain a board member of Google's parent company, Alphabet.

Kurian reportedly quit Oracle because of disagreements with executive president and chief technology officer Larry Ellison over the future of the company as the cloud sector became very competitive.

In a statement on Friday, Greene said, "Kurian, a respected technologist and executive, will join Google Cloud on November 26 and will enter the leadership role in early 2019."

Kurian used to oversee cloud development at Oracle, the world's second largest software company. But it has struggled to move the company to cloud computing and Oracle is struggling to gain ground against Amazon Web Services and Microsoft's Azure. He will now have a chance to try it again.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, said, "We are really excited to welcome Thomas, whose product vision, customer focus and deep expertise will be a great asset to our growing cloud business.

Kurian said he "is thrilled to join the fantastic Google Cloud team at this important and promising time."

"I look forward to building on the success of recent years to enter the next phase of growth," he added.

An executive member of Oracle for 13 years, Kurian led a software development team of 35,000 people in 32 countries with a research and development budget of $ 4 billion.

His twin brother, George Kurian, is the CEO of California-based data management and data services company Hybrid Cloud, NetApp.
