For his last meal on the final episode of his show “Parts Unknown,” late chef Anthony Bourdain devoured a surprisingly simple meal — hard-boiled eggs in a friend’s Lower East Side apartment.
The episode aired Sunday on CNN and follows Bourdain, who died by suicide in June at 61, to his home city, where he reminisces with pals, including Blondie’s Debbie Harry, and talks about the effects of gentrification.
“This is a show about a very special place, a very special time. And some very special people. So much happened — so much began — on New York’s Lower East Side,” Bourdain says at the beginning of the episode, where he visits staples like Ray’s Candy Store, John’s of 12th Street, Veselka and B&H Dairy for a steaming bowl of matzo ball soup.
In a sobering scene, the TV personality and author talks about the friends who “didn’t make it” — lost to violence, the AIDS epidemic or heroin addiction, which Bourdain also battled.
In the final scene, Bourdain’s musician and painter friend John Lurie serves him a plate of hard-boiled eggs.
“I am grateful and honored,” Bourdain says when presented with the dish.
“Eggs, the perfect food,” he adds, smiling as he cracks one open and takes a bite.
