In May 2017, Weiner pleaded guilty to a charge of transferring obscene content to a minor in a federal court in Manhattan. The charges stem from communications between the former congressman and a 15-year-old girl on social media sites between January and March 2016.

"This crime has been my background," Weiner told the court. "I have no excuse, I have a victim of a youngster who deserved better."

Mr. Weiner was a prominent member of the US Democratic Congress before his resignation in 2011, following the publication of textual, sometimes explicit, sexual messages exchanged with women other than his wife. During his run at the City Hall of New York City in 2013, sexually explicit exchanges with other women were released before he was completely beaten in this race.

Weiner's former wife, Huma Abedin, was one of the main aides of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. "This projected release date includes credits for time spent in good behavior and time spent in good behavior during the rest of his sentence," reads a statement from the Bureau of Prisons to CNN.
