HUNTINGTON, West Virginia – Anti-vaccine signs claiming routine childhood vaccines are fatal have appeared in many West Virginia cities.
They warn that the son of Nick Catone, a veteran of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, died of a vaccine, although the death of the infant was officially declared sudden infant death syndrome.
Dr. Michael Kilkenny, chief medical officer of the Cabell-Huntington Health Department, said the case was tragic, but the consensus of the medical community that vaccines are safe and effective remains unchanged. The Herald-Dispatch reported Sunday that the posts were posted this month in Parkersburg, Dunbar and Huntington as part of a nationwide campaign led by the non-profit group Learn The Risk. More than 30 similar billboards have popped up in Pennsylvania, New York and in other states.
