In an interview published Friday by BuzzFeed News, Apple CEO Tim Cook asked Bloomberg to withdraw a controversial investigation report that Chinese spies were using microchips to infiltrate several major US technology companies.
Although Apple issued a statement denying Bloomberg's findings shortly after the publication of the survey, Cook's comment to BuzzFeed News was the first time the CEO spoke about it publicly. It is an unusually conflicting gesture of the head of the world's most valuable technology company.
"There is no truth in their story about Apple," Cook told BuzzFeed News. "They need to do the right thing and retract."
Bloomberg discovered that Chinese spies have been able to implant tiny chips on motherboards manufactured by Supermicro Computer and set up servers used by several of the largest US technology companies, including Amazon and Apple. The chips were designed to provide secret access to private data on machines, the report says.
Since the publication of the report, a series of statements by government officials and information security professionals – including some named in the articles – has cast doubt on its key findings.
