AP RECAP: Chris Petersen retired from the party that was taking place in the end zone where his players were circulating the Apple Cup for the sixth year in a row. He leaned over and grabbed a piece of snow that covered the grass at Martin Stadium and fired on the snowballs thrown by his two sons.
The Washington coach and his players have been thrilled – snow angels, snowball fights – after the Huskies have maintained their dominance over the Washington State in an Apple Cup, purple and ice cream. Gold will not be forgotten any time soon.
"I've heard it's a shame to lose to the Cougs, and I'm glad I do not have to experience it," said Washington quarterback Jake Browning.
Myles Gaskin was released for an 80-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter and 16th Washington won its second Pac-12 North Division title in three years, beating Friday night No. 7 Washington State. 28-15.
With strong winds blowing in waves of snow, Gaskin found enough traction to bring the Huskies to the Pac-12 Championship game and once again ruin the title hopes of the state of Washington. It was the third year in a row that the Huskies were denying the state of Washington the title of North Crown.
Gaskin ran for 170 yards and three touchdowns, one year after 192 goals and four goals against the Cougars. He was the best player on the pitch one night when Washington needed his senior running back to be what he was. The Huskies (9-3, 7-2 Pac-12) will face Utah in the conference title game next Friday in Santa Clara, California. The winner will win a place at the Rose Bowl.
"Myles, what are you saying? This guy can do it all. He's the ultimate competitor. When you need something good, he's the guy who's going to do it," said Petersen.
Washington State (10-2, 7-2) carried the last hope of the Pac-12 to make its way into the college football playoffs, but the air raid was based primarily on a snow combo and a sticky secondary from Washington. Gardner Minshew was 26 out of 35 for 152 yards.
