President Trump Saturday has targeted Apple The tech giant said the White House's proposed tariffs for China could lead to price increases on popular consumer devices such as the AirPods, the company's wireless headsets and the Apple Watch.
In a tweet, Trump said that there was an "easy solution" to Apple's potential problems, with tax relief: "Make your products in the United States instead of China. Start building new plants now. Exciting!"
Apple declined to comment on the president's tweet.
Earlier this week, Apple said in a regulatory file that the $ 200 billion fee proposed by the Chinese president would cover "a wide range of Apple products," ranging from Mac Mini computers to cables, chargers, and laptops. . "Our concern about these tariffs is that the United States will be the hardest hit, which will result in lower US growth and competitiveness and higher prices for US consumers," the company said.
Since then, Trump has threatened $ 267 billion in additional tariffs on China, a move revealed on Friday that could cover virtually every product made in China entering the United States.
Prices are in the lead for Apple CEO Tim Cook, who has personally lobbied Trump for months on tax and trade issues, going as far as last month with President and First Lady Melania Trump at the Trump National Golf Course. Cook's personal diplomacy stands in stark contrast to some of his tech peers, who have not engaged Trump directly – and are often the target of much more aggressive tweets against their business practices.
Like other tech giants, Apple has benefited from the revision of the US tax code last year and the company is committed to restoring much of the $ 252 billion cash dollars that she holds abroad. In January, the company also announced its "direct contribution" to the US economy through investments and other expenses of more than $ 350 billion over the next five years. Some components for Apple products, including glass from manufacturers like Corning, are made in the United States, the company said.
Trump has previously claimed that Apple is building new factories in the United States, but the iPhone maker has not announced such plans.
