NEW YORK (AP) – Apple has signed a multi-year production contract with A24, the famous New York-based studio, behind "Moonlight" and "Lady Bird".

Persons close to the contract who requested anonymity because they were not allowed to comment confirmed the agreement on Thursday. Apple invests in scripted content to compete with Netflix and Amazon. The agreement puts Apple in touch with one of the most respected producers of prestige films and fiction films.

Neither Apple nor A24 commented on Thursday. It is not known how many films are included in the contract or if the films will be distributed in theaters.

According to rumors, A24 could potentially be an acquisition target for Apple. This deal leaves the distributor with films like "The Witch", "Mid90s", "Hereditary" and "Eighth Grade" with its independence.
