Approaching front could trigger severe weather tonight in Lehigh Valley

UPDATE: A tornado watch has been issued for most of Pennsylvania, including the Lehigh Valley, through Tuesday night.

The watch is in effect until 11 p.m. for Lehigh, Northampton, Berks, Carbon and Monroe counties, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service has posted a hazardous weather outlook warning of the likelihood of severe weather later today in the Lehigh Valley.

Meteorologists say an approaching cold front will trigger thunderstorms this afternoon into this evening which will impact the region. Some of these could be severe, with damaging winds.

The probability for widespread hazardous weather is low, with the best chance for storms across the southern Poconos and most of southeast PA, as well as northern NJ, generally north and west of the I-95 corridor from Newark to Philadelphia.

A ‘Bermuda High’ remains anchored off the coast, the weather service says, and southwest flow behind the high will continue to usher a sub-tropical airmass will into the area today. It’s expected to be quite warm and humid, with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s.

The wet weather is expected to hold off until the late afternoon and nighttime hours. The forecast discussion from Mount Holly says damaging winds and heavy rain resulting in poor drainage flooding will be possible starting around 4 p.m.

Unfortunately, the phrase ‘cold front’ will almost be an oxymoron as it relates to the actual temperatures. The weather service says the front will wash out after midnight, and meteorologists are not expecting much of a change in airmass for most of the region.

Dew points are expected to fall to around 60 in the southern Poconos and northern NJ, and from the upper 60s to the mid 60s elsewhere.

In October, it will continue to feel like summer

Despite average high temperatures in the upper 60s in Allentown, temperatures will soar to near or above 80 degrees each afternoon through Thursday.

Much like today, a cold front is anticipated late in the day Thursday that could touch off some scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. The weather service says the best chances for this will be north and west of the I-95 corridor.

Mostly dry and seasonable weather is anticipated for Friday and Saturday, but on Sunday it’s likely temperatures will begin to build again in our area.
