There’s always a parceling up of shared items at the end of any relationship. In Pete Davidson and Ariana Grande’s summer romance that ended just as the weather turned leafy, those items are the ring, the tattoos, and the small pig named Piggy Smallz. The tattoos they must keep, though they can get them covered up and so rend meaning from the other person, as Davidson has already done with the Dangerous Woman-style bunny mask behind his ear (it’s a heart now). Grande gave back the pear-shaped $93,000 ring, according to TMZ. He will, I assume, throw it into the ocean from the bow of a boat 84 years from now.
But Ariana Grande will keep the pig. There’s something poetic in that sentence, no? Ariana Grande will keep the pig. Especially in an era when “pig” or “piggy” is President Donald Trump’s favorite slur for women (before “horseface,” of course), there’s something even Virginia Woolfian about it: Ariana Grande said she would raise the pig herself. If not Woolfian, then maybe Woodsian, as in Elle Woods, as in Legally Blonde: It means I’m keeping the dog [pig], dumbass.
It’s probably best this way. Davidson does have a tattoo of the pig, but Grande is the one whose music video it starred in and the one who wanted it first, according to Davidson, who appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers a couple weeks before the breakup. There he discussed Piggy Smallz and how it came to live in the Davidson-Grande household as the sun set on their relationship. “This girl,” he said, by which he meant his fiancée, “She was like, ‘I want a pig.’ And then an hour later it was just there. You know what I mean?” He’s always played the gobsmacked scumbro who couldn’t believe his luck to the camera, but here he seemed genuinely afraid of his partner’s awesome, pig-summoning power. It’s a tale as old as time. And so now, Ariana Grande will raise the pig herself.
