Aric Almirola overtook teammate Kurt Busch on Turnout 4 of the final lap at Talladega to win his first win of the season and advance to the third round of the NASCAR playoffs.
Stewart-Haas Racing dominated Sunday's race, but fuel efficiency was uncertain for them and many more at the forefront. The SHR cars clashed for the last time on lap 138 of the scheduled 188-lap race in overtime because of a fall three laps from the end.
Almirola, Busch, Kevin Harvick and Clint Bowyer were among the top four at the time. Harvick had to leave the track before the race went green with two laps to go, leaving his three teammates to fight for the win.
Bowyer finished second and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. third.
A big crash occurred in Turn 1 on the last lap, but NASCAR kept the race green until the finish. It was a contrast to the Saturday race of the Truck Series, where a fall on the backstretch in the last lap had triggered a cautionary flag of officials at the race control.
NASCAR officials usually hold the warning flag in the final lap if all cars manage to return to the finish line. Chase Elliott and Matt DiBenedetto were involved in the wreck and did not finish the race. They were also forced to go to the NBC, a protocol used by a driver who has to leave his vehicle earlier due to an accident.
