Arif Alvi became the 13th president of Pakistan

The President of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Mian Saqib Nisar, was sworn in at a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Imran, the commander of the SFOC, General Qamar.

President-elect Dr. Arif Alvi has been appointed head of Pakistan at a ceremony held Sunday in Aiwan-e-Sadr, Islamabad.

Pakistan's Chief Justice Saqib Nisar was sworn in at a ceremony attended by senior civilian and military officials, including Prime Minister Imran Khan, Chief of Staff QASA Javed Bajwa and the Chairman of the Committee Joint Chiefs of Staff Zubair Hayat.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Speaker of the Senate Sadiq Sanjrani, Speaker of the National Assembly Asad Qaiser, Minister of Finance Asad Umer, President Azad Jammu and Kashmir Sardar Masood Khan, Minister of Defense Pervez Khattak, Federal Minister of Defense Khan Information and Broadcasting, Punjab Chief Minister, Usman Buzdar, Sindh Chief Minister, Murad Ali Shah, Governor Sindh Imran Ismail, Governor of Punjab Chaudhry, Muhammad Sarwar and Minister of Foreign Affairs Railways, Sheikh Rasheed, were also present.

Saudi and Chinese diplomats also participated in the presidential oath.

Alvi succeeds Mamnoon Hussain, who was sworn in as the 12th head of state on 9 September 2013 after being elected as candidate of the Pakistan Muslim-Nawaz League (PML-N).

Alvi, a Pakistani from Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was elected 13th president of Pakistan while the country's electoral college, made up of the Senate, national and provincial assemblies, voted on 4 September.

Alvi has contested two opposition candidates, Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal, chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Pakistani People's Party leader Aitzaz Ahsan.

According to the Pakistan Election Commission (ECP), Alvi won a majority of votes with 353 votes, followed by Fazl with 185 votes and Ahsan with 124 votes.

The companion

A founding member of the ruling ITP, Alvi began his political career as president of a student union in Lahore and is one of the few original authors of the PTI constitution.

A dentist by profession, Alvi was the first Pakistani to be elected a World Dental Federation Councilor in 2007. He is the Managing Director of the trust created by Shirinbai Jinnah.

Alvi graduated from BDS dentistry at the Montmonrency College of Dentistry. He completed his Masters in Prosthodontics at the University of Michigan in 1975 and the Masters Degree in Orthodontics in 1984.

In 1969, Alvi actively participated in the student movement during the era of Field Marshal Ayub Khan. He was shot dead during a demonstration on Mall Road in Lahore, and is proudly carrying a bullet in his right arm.

The cleric, the lawyer and the companion

In 1979, he was a candidate for Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) for the provincial assembly, but the elections did not take place.

After joining PTI in 1990, Alvi became chairman of the party's Sindh branch in 1997. In 2001, he was promoted to vice president PTI. He held the position of Secretary General from 2006 to 2013.

Alvi participated in the 1997 elections on a provincial seat before running for a seat in the National Assembly in 2002. In 2013, he was elected MP for the Karachi constituency (NA-250). In the 2018 elections, Alvi won a clear victory over NA-247 Karachi.
