The Jets supporters are looking for someone to blame after watching three consecutive, ugly defeats until late September.
And they chose coach Todd Bowles.
Social media and sports radio broadcasts have been many to call Bowles after the debacle Sunday in Jacksonville. It's hard to blame fans for their anger. The Jets lost winning games against Miami and Cleveland with familiar mistakes, and were not ready to play in the first period against the Jags.
Bowles is now 11-26 in his last 37 games since he's won 10 of his first 15 games as a coach.
But a key player came to his defense on Monday.
"Todd Bowles is definitely the good guy," said defenseman Leonard Williams. "I feel that we have clearly built the right direction. What I like most is the attitude of the guys on the team. Everyone wants to play for each other, and that says a lot. Everyone is locked. Even if we took some L, everyone is still locked and bought in the system. And that's what I like about the team and the direction we're taking right now. "
The Jets showed signs of this promise by hosting Lions Week 1 in Detroit. But since then, it's just bad performance and lost opportunities. But Williams said the fans must be patient because the Jets are closer than it seems.
The story continues after the gallery …
"I think we all have good pieces and that's just a matter of collage," Williams said. "We have all the good things here, but it's just small little things in the gaps and little things we need to put together and it's going to take a long time. I think people are too quick to give up or give up an organization instead of allowing them to build when it takes time. "
Nobody expected the Jets to be contenders this year. Sam Darnold, their quarterback, still has several holes in the lineup after last year's withdrawal. But they had to show progress compared to last year. And so far, they have not done it.
The Jets continue to play well in the heats, but never enough to get the job done in a tight match.
Bowles, who signed a two-year extension last year that keeps him as coach of the Jets until 2020, was questioned on Monday about why the Jets could not play together.
"It's a good question," Bowles said. "It's something we absolutely need to improve and maintain. We have shown that we are capable of it. This is an error and an error that we must be sure to move forward if we want to do something. "
The mood in the locker room after Sunday's game was dark. But many players offered the same message: the season is not over. Cornerback Trumaine Johnson echoed this sentiment on Monday.
"You can not become negative now," said Johnson. "We understand that we are in a hole right now, being 1-3, but keep pushing. We still have goals and the season is long.
"You can not panic," he continued. "I understand we're in a hole right now, but we still have a lot of games to play and I trust each of the guys in that locker room to turn the season around."

The Jets have a chance to put things back on track with three straight home games starting in October. The match begins on Sunday against a Denver team that will play a short week and cross the country after Monday night's loss to Kansas City.
"It's really critical, just because we have not won our first game at home yet … and we have to really dominate at home," said Williams. "So for ourselves and for the included fans and for all the skeptics, I think we need to do a good job for the next three games."
If the Jets do not do this, Bowles's calls to work will only grow.
