Matthew Phelps, a Raleigh man who told 911 officers that he thought he stabbed his wife after taking too much medication, pleaded guilty to first degree murder in a county courtroom. Wake Friday morning.
He will serve a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
The victim's family, 29-year-old Lauren Phelps, was present in the courtroom to present a statement from the victim.
An autopsy report revealed that Lauren had been stabbed 123 times.
According to the report, she succumbed to multiple injuries to her face, neck, torso, arms and jugular vein.

Officials stated that when they found the victim on September 1, 2017, she was in a fetal position in her bedroom floor.
She was taken to WakeMed where she died.
Phelps, 29, claims to have taken cold medicine at the time and does not remember what happened.
"I have blood on me and there is a bloody knife on the bed, and I think I have done it.I can not believe it," he said at the time. a call to 911.

In this 911 call, Phelps claimed that he dreamed of killing his wife. When he woke up, he found himself covered in blood, with Lauren's body on the floor.
Money orders published in April revealed to parents that the couple had money problems.
The detectives swept through social media, revealing that Phelps might have been "possibly fascinated and imitated by a serial killer character described in the American Psycho movie."
