American photographer Brad Goldpaint has defeated thousands of amateur and professional photographers from around the world to win the 2018 photographer's title of the Insight Investment Astronomy magazine of the Royal Observatory Greenwich.

In addition to winning the first prize of £ 10,000, his image takes pride of place in the award-winning photography exhibition that will be inaugurated at the National Maritime Museum on October 24th.

The judges were captivated by the impressive image of Goldpaint. Taken in Moab, Utah, the photograph depicts a majestic composition of immense red rock formations with the glorious Milky Way above right and the Andromeda galaxy on the left.

Competition Judge Will Gater said, "For me, this beautiful image is emblematic of everything that it means to be an astrophotographer, the balance between light and dark, textures and tones. contrasting earth and sky and the photographer alone under a starry vault of a breathtaking scale and beauty. "

Winning images from other categories and special prizes include breathtaking Aurora Borealis over the fjord, in the beautiful Lofoten archipelago in northern Norway, by Mikkel Beiter (Denmark); The picture taken by Nicolas Lefaudeux (France) shows the total solar eclipse of the month of August surrounded by the blue star Regulus – the little king – and the red planet Mars; a remarkable parade of planets from our solar system, which photographer Martin Lewis (UK) has managed to capture from his own backyard; and the captivating image of Mario Cogo (Italy) of the Witch Head Nebula, a very light cloud of molecular gas illuminated by supergiant star Rigel.

After a phenomenal increase in the number of young aspiring astrophotographers in the category Young Photographer of the Year in Astronomy, 15-year-old Fabian Dalpiaz (Italy) wins first prize for his amazing photograph of a meteor flying overhead the beautiful autumnal landscape of the Alpe di Siusi.
