The Astros may lose the Marwin Gonzalez utility in an independent agency. If so, they may now have insurance in the form of former star All-Star player Aledmys Diaz. The Astros have announced that they had acquired Diaz Saturday at the Blue Jays for Triple-A pitcher, Trent Thornton, as part of an exchange against one.
Diaz, 28, had an unexpected season in 2016 as a rookie. He hit .300 / .369 / .510 (134 OPS +) with 17 homers and 65 RBIs in 111 games during an All-Star season. Since then, however, it has been a major disappointment. In 2017-18, he beat 0.21 / 0.298 / 0.428 (95 OPS +). He hit 18 homers in 422 goals last season, so there is power. Some might see the September numbers (.311 / .369 / .500) or the second half numbers (.290 / .333 / .523) and also annoy them.
Diaz mainly played short stops in his career and, of course, Carlos Correa held up well. He also played at third base (Alex Bregman) and second (Jose Altuve). He also has nine innings in the left field, so, again, maybe Marwin Gonzalez is the model. He started as an infielder and ended up playing only outdoors in 2018.
Thornton, 25, was 9-8 with an average of 4.22 ties, 1.20 points and 122 strikeouts in the 124 1/3 inning. Triple-A series. He threw a 4.02 in 15 innings and 2/3 with 20 strikeouts against four goals in the Arizona Autumn League. Most of the time, he was a starter, but he could have an impact on the Blue Jays' paddock in 2019.
