The anticipation grows with the zeros of the Mega Millions lottery winnings. The prize reached $ 1.6 billion after nobody won the jackpot in a draw Friday night.

It's the biggest lottery jackpot in history, surpassing the Powerball prize of $ 1.586 billion in January 2016.

Mega Millions senior director Gordon Medenica called it "unknown territory".

A winner who wishes to receive the money in a lump sum may opt for the cash option of approximately $ 905 million.

The next draw will take place on Tuesday at 23h. AND.

Medenica told NPR that some 280 million tickets had been sold on Friday for the draw.

The chances of winning on Tuesday are about 1 in 302 million – almost the adult population of the United States.

And, while lottery aspirants have their superstitions, "The whole process is completely random," says Medenica. The vast majority of people use the quick selection option and let the computer choose their numbers.

Even some NPR hosts take their risks.

Ticket sales are Tuesdays and Fridays, the days of the draw. According to Mr. Medenica, they are growing rapidly throughout the day and tend to peak between 6 pm and 8 pm when people come home from work.

Chances are good that a winner – or winners – get good news on Tuesday night. But if no one does, the Mega Millions jackpot will hit a new record.
