One person died and four others were injured in a shootout in downtown Denver near Coors Field, police said. There are no suspects in custody or known motives.
Denver police tweeted that four people had been transported to hospitals in the area for treatment.
The shooting occurred in a neighborhood of new apartment buildings, restaurants and bars near the Colorado Rockies Stadium, just as the evening rush hour was starting.
Police spokesman Doug Schepman said the investigators did not know if more than one gunman was involved and did not have any description of the suspects.
A witness told the Denver Post he saw a man holding a two-handed gun shoot in a group of indigents, and one of the group fought back.
"Oh my God, oh my God," said Hisam Derani. "I saw him approach the crowd."
Derani said he was returning home after hearing about six shots. He said he saw one or two shots before dodging.
He said that an armed man got into a car, slammed the door and went away.
Derani said that the police questioned him and later asked him if the gunman was a man detained as a potential suspect, but Derani replied in the negative.
Schepman said the investigators did not yet know what led to the shooting.
"It is too early in the investigation to be able to say exactly what happened here and why," he said. The investigators interviewed witnesses and searched for a video.
A witness told CBS Denver that he had seen two men talking in front of a man, then shot the other in the head and kept firing.
The area surrounding the shooting was closed to traffic and residents.
