At least 10 people were killed Friday in explosions near a popular hotel and police headquarters in Mogadishu, capital of Somalia, police said.

A first "two explosions hit the perimeter of the Sahafi Hotel along the main road … we are killing more than 10 people, most of them civilians and security guards," said a police official , Ibrahim Mohamed. A third explosion and gunshots were also heard in the area, according to a AFP journalist.

Two car bombs exploded near two popular hotels as well as the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) police headquarters, followed by gunfire and a third explosion shortly thereafter in the same area.

The exact target was not clear at first.

Mogadishu faces frequent bombing raids by Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda affiliate who has been fighting for more than a decade to overthrow the Somali government's internationally backed government.

The Shabaab were forced to leave the capital by African Union troops in 2011.

But they still control parts of the campaign and attack, apparently at will, government, military and civilian targets in Mogadishu and the cities in the region.
