Three children and three women were among those killed during the attack on the headquarters of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan, or PDKI, the party said in a statement.
The attack occurred in Koysinjaq, a town located about 65 kilometers east of Erbil, in the semi – autonomous Kurdish region of northern Iraq and in some 300 kilometers north of Baghdad.
PDKI accused Iran of attacking its base. "Iran has used long-range missiles in a coordinated attack on KDP bases and adjacent refugee camps," the statement said.
He also pointed to Iran on Twitter, and posted photos of the smoke emanating from the attack.
A PDKI representative in Erbil, Mohammed Salih, told CNN that the bombardments were intense and that they had been fired by missiles fired from Iranian territory near the border, targeting more than five sites.
PDKI leaders Mustafa Mouloudi and Khalid Azizi were wounded in the attack, Salih said.
Despite nearly a century of Kurdish nationalist movements in various countries, the Kurds have never had a nation of their own.
