Gunmen appeared to have entered a part of the consulate – one official said that they had gone to the visa section.
Local TV channels have broadcast images of a plume of smoke, although the nature of the explosion is not clear.
Security forces were deployed and the area was cordoned off, Geo TV announced in Pakistan.
A security guard was also injured in the attack.
