CASTRO VALLEY – A man is behind bars after his arrest in connection with an attempted attack on a political candidate, authorities said.
At around 3:45 pm on Sunday, Alameda County Sheriff's deputies were working at the Castro Valley Fall Festival, in the 2500 block of Castro Valley Boulevard, when they learned that a possible stab had been committed on a sellers stand.
MEPs spoke with Rudy Peters, a candidate for a seat at the local Congress, and with witnesses who said another man had approached Peters in an aggressive manner, commenting on his party and saying that he was not the only one. other politicians.
MPs suspect the man of having pulled a knife to switch blade and tried to stab Peters. When the knife apparently malfunctioned, the candidate physically fought with the man, who escaped but was detained shortly thereafter.
Deputies searched the man, identified as Farzad Fazeli, 35, and found a knife on him. Fazeli was arrested on suspicion of assault, criminal threats, brandishing a weapon and possessing a knife with a switch blade.
Fazeli was sentenced Sunday in Santa Rita Prison, with no indication of the amount of bail or upcoming hearing, according to county records.
The sheriff's representatives sent the details of the case to the Alameda County Attorney's Office for a possible charge, but additional charges could be added after further review, the sheriff's spokesman, Sgt. Ray Kelly said Tuesday.
In a tweet Tuesday, Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Hayward, decried the attack on Peters. In a Facebook post, Peters said Joe Grcar and he, a state assembly candidate, had been victimized.
