Attorney General Steve Marshall's wife dies

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) –

The wife of Attorney General Steve Marshall has died, according to a statement issued by the Attorney General's office.

The statement says that Bridgette Marshall died Sunday morning after "a long struggle with mental illness". The complete declaration is below:

We are saddened to announce that Bridgette Marshall, the wife of Attorney General Steve Marshall, passed away this morning after a long struggle with mental illness. Bridgette was a devoted and beloved girl, a wife and a mother. We are asking the people of Alabama to keep the Marshall family in their prayers during this difficult time.

Marshall is currently re-elected. He will face Troy King during a first Republican poll on July 17th. King issued a statement, saying that he paused in his campaign:

"Paige and I have just learned of the tragic death of Bridgette Marshall Today is a sad and difficult day and today we are not in different political campaigns or camps. Husbands and Wives, Fathers and Mothers We can not imagine the deep sense of loss and grief that the Marshall family has to face.

We offer our deepest condolences and sincere prayers to Attorney General Steve Marshall and his family and pray that God's grace, peace and hope will surround and support them.

Out of respect for the Marshall family, I suspended my campaign during this time of mourning. I ordered that all our advertising be stopped.
May God keep them in the palm of his hand. "

Governor Kay Ivey also issued a statement on the death of Bridgette Marshall:

This morning, I was extremely saddened to learn of the sudden death of Bridgette Marshall. Bridgette was the loving wife of Attorney General Steve Marshall and the caring mother of their daughter Faith. A mother is the backbone of a family and especially important for her daughter. I pray that Steve and Faith will be comforted in this extremely difficult time. It's never easy to lose a loved one and certainly not as suddenly as that. I spoke with Attorney General Marshall and offered my support. I know that the people of Alabama will show the Marshall family a great love and sympathy during this time.

Democratic nominee Walt Maddox also extended his condolences to the Marshall family:

Stephanie and I were saddened to learn of the passing of Bridgette Marshall. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Marshall family during this very difficult time.
