The wait is over, Tennessee.
First-year coach Jeremy Pruitt took the flights to the Jordan-Hare stadium under the slogan "two touchdowns" Saturday afternoon, before taking away 30 to 24 against the Auburn Tigers. This win breaks a run of 11 losses and is Pruitt's first win in his coaching career.
Do not get me wrong, No. 21 Auburn should not have been ranked according to how his attack played all season. But that should not make us forget what it means for Pruitt and the volunteers.
Quarterback Jarrett Guarantano had 21 assists in 32 passes for 328 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions against a Tigers defense that conceded only 188 yards per game in the air and a record 153 in the competition categories. DRY. This has nothing to do with Auburn's inefficiency, it's a quarterback in a hostile environment behind an offensive line that has been fragile all season.
If you combine Guarantano's newfound confidence with a large group of recipients that seemed to be one of the best of the conference on Saturday afternoon, you have the recipe for success. Jauan Jennings and Marquez Callaway were already known for the Flights, but Josh Palmer continued his work as the ultimate threat to the big game with three catches for 84 yards. That gives Palmer 11 assists for 284 yards during the season, or 25.8 yards per jack.
Tennessee needed that win, deserved that win and deserved that win.
Aside from the six-game debacle against Florida, the Vols played football throughout the year, did not resign and adopted Pruitt's mentality. They just did not have the talent or experience to make a living.
This paid off against the Tigers.
Tennessee is not back. With the Georgian giant Georgia and an experienced coach at Dan Mullen in a fertile Florida recruiting ground, it will take some time to get back to the conflict between SEC and East. However, 11 winless games in SEC have taken a while, as has the search for a skilled head coach who knows how to run a functional program.
Pruitt did, and laid the foundation for the future of the Tennessee football program on Saturday.
This fact has nothing to do with Auburn's inability. This just comes at the expense of the Tigers.
