Five people, including three young children, were found dead in a suburban house in Western Australia during a shocking massacre following a series of recent family tragedies, police said Monday.

The police found the remains of the three girls, along with their mother and grandmother, in the Perth family home, Agence France-Presse reports.

A man in his early twenties had alerted the regional police station. His relationship with the family was not disclosed and, while he is still in detention, no charges have been withheld, officials said.

West Australian police told AFP that "the five people killed were twins of two years, a girl of three and a half, their mother and their grandmother".

According to a neighbor, on his return from vacation, he found that his street did not have the usual noise of young children playing.

"We noticed that the next house was pretty quiet, which was unusual, since they had young children," said Richard Fairbrother, who lives next to the family home, at the Australian ABC television channel.

"We had friends staying here who also mentioned that they did not see or hear anyone nearby during the week we were away … we could hear and see the kids playing in the yard quite often.

In July, a teenager from Perth was accused of killing his mother and two siblings. Two months earlier, in a small town in western Australia, a man had shot dead his wife, daughter and four children, who had been murdered by the family.
