A 5-month-old boy died Sunday night after being drowned in a bathtub in north-central Alabama, al.com reported, citing authorities.

Sheriff Jefferson County officials responded to a public housing complex in Tarrant at approximately 8:20 pm, said Center Point Fire Chief Donnie West. Authorities on arrival found the child unconscious.

The child was taken from the apartment to paramedics, who then performed CPR and took the child to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the child was placed in the bathtub by his father, who then left the room, said Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputy Chief Randy Christian. The man came back and found his son unconscious, said Christian.

"I can not imagine how difficult it will be for this child's family," said Christian. "It will be heartbreaking for everyone involved. God be with them.

We do not know if there was anyone else in the apartment or the bathroom. An investigation is underway.

Tarrant is about a 10-minute drive north of Birmingham.
